Business and Financial Services Marketing Research

Business and Financial Services Marketing Research is a business plan event. Business services include services to businesses on a fee or contract basis. The emphasis is on marketing activities, not the development of skills required to perform a particular task or service. Financial services include financial institutions such as commercial banks, savings and loan associations, credit agencies, credit unions, consumer-finance companies, collection agencies, and credit departments of business enterprises.

The marketing research team, composed of one to three members, has been asked by the business’s owner/manager (judge) to develop a promotional campaign for the business’s customer service offerings, comparing its customer service offerings with those offered by the business’s direct competition. The team will design and conduct a marketing research study to determine the preferred customer service offerings. Based on the comparison and research, the team will identify potential customer service offerings for the business. The team will then develop a promotional campaign to promote the business’s proposed customer service offerings. Prior to the presentation, the judge will evaluate the written portion, the major emphasis of which is the content.

The oral presentation may be a maximum of 15 minutes in length—10 minutes for the team presentation and 5 minutes for judge questioning. The team members will explain and describe the project completed.

The judge is to assume the role of the business’s owner/manager. The judge will evaluate the presentation, focusing on the effectiveness of public speaking and presentation skills and how well the students respond to questions that the judge may ask during the presentation.

Competition includes a written and oral evaluation.
